When Taylor Swift’s engagement ring surfaced, it wasn’t the carat weight alone that set the conversation ablaze, it was the cut. The elongated cushion, a diamond shape rooted in antique tradition, has suddenly become the shape of the moment.

An Unconventional Choice

Taylor’s choice is striking because it celebrates individuality. Where vintage-inspired engagement rings are often imagined with a round cut diamond, hers embraces a cushion-shaped diamond with elongated proportions, an elegant departure from the familiar. Even more compelling, this silhouette is often chosen for coloured gemstones or fancy-coloured diamonds, yet hers is a white diamond. It’s a reminder that beauty, longevity, and symbolism can be expressed not only through colour, but through cut and shape.

At Ecksand, this same expression of individuality lies at the heart of our creations. We design intentional, distinct, and unforgettable jewels that celebrate the unique identity of the wearer. Our Cushion Blossom Six-Prongs Engagement Ring also highlights the romance of the cushion-cut, echoing Taylor’s embrace of poetic symbolism.

How Rare Is Her Diamond Cut?

It’s unusual in the sense that it breaks expectations. Most often, we see brilliant cuts engineered for maximum sparkle, while Taylor’s ring embraces a more elongated, soulful expression. It is rare to see such proportions in a white diamond of that scale, and it feels refreshing.

This direction also echoes a wider trend: the resurgence of vintage-inspired engagement rings such as old miners and antique cushions. These stones, cut with fewer facets and softer outlines, glow with the character of another era. Their appeal lies not in technical perfection, but in personality.

We see this same desire for individuality reflected in our clients’ requests. One favourite: our Vintage Pear-cut Diamond Engagement Ring With Milgrain Details, which blends a modern pear-cut with a delicately detailed milgrain basket. It’s a union of old-world romance and modern precision, a balance Taylor’s ring captures on a grand stage.

The Language of Vintage Style

Vintage-inspired rings are more about romance than uniform brilliance. Each stone carries warmth and nuance, with settings that highlight character over symmetry. Taylor’s ring embodies this understated charm, rejecting the predictable for something more resonant.

In our atelier, we interpret this language through pieces like the Thick Diamond Engagement Ring with Diamond Bridge. Its cathedral-like height and intricate bridge detail recall vintage architecture, while the silhouette remains contemporary and refined.

Why Vintage Resonates Today

The appeal lies in the soul. Vintage-style diamonds are carefully cut to carry a story; imperfectly beautiful, full of warmth, and distinctiveness. Many clients today prefer character-filled gems such as salt-and-pepper diamonds, like this Custom Engagement Ring with a Pear-Cut Salt and Pepper Diamond, champagne tones as seen in this Custom Two-Stone Champagne Diamond Ring, or stones with subtle colour undertones that would have been overlooked a decade ago. Even those with access to flawless, investment-grade stones often choose pieces with visible character because they resonate more deeply.

Our Yellow Diamond Micropavé Engagement Ring reflects this balance. Fancy-coloured diamonds paired with micropavé details create a jewel that feels both vintage in spirit and modern in design.

Updating Tradition for the Modern Bride

At Ecksand, our approach to vintage style is not replication but reinterpretation. We preserve the romance of antique silhouettes but refine them for modern comfort and longevity. Minimalist settings allow the diamond to take centre stage, while details such as micropavé accents, diamond bridges, or sculptural silhouettes add layers of depth. Each ring is built with 100% recycled gold and crafted in our Montreal atelier, ensuring both beauty and sustainability endure.

Are Unusual Cuts Here to Stay?

Without question. Over the last five to seven years, clients have increasingly sought out atypical cuts, shapes and colours that reflect their personality rather than tradition. Today, the engagement ring is less about adhering to round brilliance and more about finding a diamond that resonates personally. Taylor’s choice mirrors this shift beautifully.

Although her ring brings vintage style to a traditional diamond colour, many of our clients turn towards unconventional coloured stones with vintage detailing. Our Art-Deco Diamond Halo Engagement Ring with a Centre Blue Sapphire is one such example. Its storied halo recalls timeless art-deco design while the sapphire centre lends a unique identity.

This is the direction that excites us most: each custom jewel becomes a piece of personal art, reflecting individuality, heritage, and the promise of what’s to come.

Ecksand’s Perspective

Like all our engagement rings, elongated cushion cuts are never mass-produced. Elongated cushion cuts specifically are created exclusively through our custom ring services, and cannot be found through our diamond ring builder. They are crafted one by one with lab grown and natural diamonds, and always in 100% recycled gold.

Swift’s ring may have reignited cultural fascination with the elongated cushion, but for us, the allure has always been in its balance of heritage and modernity, a shape that refuses to follow trends, designed to outlast them.
